Understanding Adaptive Mode

Adaptive Mode is OT Bestie's intelligent learning system that personalizes your study experience based on your performance. Instead of randomly selecting questions, it strategically targets areas where you need the most improvement, making your study time more efficient and effective.

How Adaptive Mode Works

When you enable Adaptive Mode on the Practice Questions page, our algorithm analyzes your answer history across all domains and tasks. It then calculates which areas need the most attention based on several key factors:

  • Accuracy Rate - Questions you've answered correctly vs. incorrectly in each area
  • Domain Weight - How heavily each domain is weighted on the actual NBCOT® exam
  • Baseline Coverage - Whether you've attempted questions from all tasks
  • Recent Performance - Your trends over recent study sessions
Smart Panel

When Adaptive Mode is active, the Smart Panel appears showing your baseline coverage progress, next focus area, and explains why each question was selected for you.

The Baseline Phase

When you first start using Adaptive Mode, the system enters a "baseline" phase. During this phase, it ensures you answer at least one question from each task across all domains. This helps the algorithm understand your strengths and weaknesses across the entire exam blueprint.

You can track your baseline progress in the Smart Panel, which shows something like "12/24 tasks" to indicate how many tasks you've completed baseline coverage for.

How to Enable Adaptive Mode

  1. Navigate to Practice Questions

Go to the Practice Questions page from your dashboard or sidebar menu.

  2. Find the Mode Switch

Look for the Practice Mode section near the top. You'll see three buttons: Adaptive, Random, and Manual.

  3. Click "Adaptive"

Select the Adaptive button (marked with a lightning bolt icon) to enable smart question selection.

  4. View the Smart Panel

The Smart Panel will appear showing your current baseline coverage and recommended focus areas.

Understanding the Roadmap

Click the "Roadmap" button in the Smart Panel to see a visual overview of all domains and tasks. This shows:

  • Which tasks you've completed baseline coverage for
  • Your accuracy in each area (color-coded from red to green)
  • Where the algorithm recommends focusing next
  • Domain weights showing exam importance
Pro Tip

Use Adaptive Mode consistently over several study sessions to see the best results. The algorithm becomes more accurate as it learns your patterns and builds more data about your performance.

Adaptive vs. Random vs. Manual

Adaptive Mode

Best for targeted improvement. The system chooses questions strategically based on your performance data. It prioritizes areas where you're struggling while still reinforcing your strengths.

Random Mode

Good for simulating exam conditions. Questions are selected randomly across all available content, similar to how the actual NBCOT® exam works.

Manual Mode

Best for focused study on specific topics. You choose the specific domain, task, and knowledge area to practice. Use this when you want to drill down on a particular topic.

Important Note

Adaptive Mode requires some initial question history to work effectively. If you're just starting out, complete a few sessions first to give the algorithm enough data to make smart recommendations.

Why This Focus?

The Smart Panel includes a "Why this focus" section that explains the algorithm's reasoning. Common reasons include:

  • "Baseline coverage needed" - You haven't attempted questions in this task yet
  • "Low accuracy area" - Your performance in this area needs improvement
  • "High-weight domain" - This domain is heavily weighted on the exam
  • "Recent mistakes" - You've been getting questions wrong in this area lately

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch between modes during a session?

Yes! You can switch between Adaptive, Random, and Manual modes at any time. Your stats and progress are preserved regardless of which mode you use.

Does Adaptive Mode affect my stats?

No, your stats are tracked the same way regardless of mode. Adaptive Mode only affects how questions are selected, not how they're scored.

How long until Adaptive Mode is effective?

The algorithm starts working immediately but becomes more accurate after you've answered 50-100 questions across different areas. The more data it has, the smarter its recommendations become.
