Random Mode delivers questions from all domains and topics without any targeting or weighting. It's the closest simulation of actual NBCOT® exam conditions.
When to Use Random Mode
Random Mode is ideal for:
- Exam simulation - Practice switching between topics like on test day
- Initial assessment - Get an honest baseline across all domains
- Final preparation - Test yourself without algorithmic help
- Building mental flexibility - Train your brain to handle any topic
How Random Mode Works
When you enable Random Mode:
- Questions are selected randomly from the entire question bank
- No consideration is given to your past performance
- All domains are equally likely to appear
- You may see questions you've answered before
The real NBCOT® doesn't know your weak areas. Random Mode trains you to handle unexpected topic shifts, building the mental agility needed for exam day.
How to Enable Random Mode
Go to Practice Questions
Navigate to the Practice Questions page from your dashboard.
Click "Random"
Select the Random button (shuffle icon) in the mode selector.
Start Practicing
Questions will now come from any domain at random.
Random Mode vs. Other Modes
Random Mode
Questions are completely random. Best for simulating real exam conditions and testing overall readiness. No targeting or optimization.
Adaptive Mode
Algorithm selects questions based on your weak areas. More efficient for learning but doesn't simulate true exam randomness.
Manual Mode
You choose exactly what to practice. Best for drilling specific topics but offers no randomization.
Use Adaptive Mode for daily practice, Manual Mode for weak-area drilling, and Random Mode for periodic assessments and final preparation.
Best Practices
- Use Random Mode for baseline assessment when you first start studying
- Take 50-100 questions in Random Mode weekly to gauge true progress
- In the final 2 weeks before your exam, increase Random Mode usage
- Don't rely solely on Random Mode - combine with Adaptive for efficient learning
